...busy elf...

So, Jer keeps asking me why I haven't written anything recently and I said, "I've been busy and I just haven't felt it."
Well, I guess tonight I feel it.
Things have been busy, though with nothing particularly unusual. The main suspect is work. It is retail's freak-out season...literally...people are freaking out! They just want a lot of assurance that they are buying the best easel, or the perfect paint colors, or the coolest sketchbook. I say chill people! The artist's in your life will love you regardless of what you get them, though unless you definitely know their art, a gift certificate is the way to go.
Otherwise:
We had a lovely visit from Joan and Rachel over Thanksgiving. It was really nice having more family around, and I enjoyed having an early morning companion to chat and drink coffee with.
Our friends Christine and Evan had a long, healthy, cute as an old man, baby boy two weeks ago. We got to meet him yesterday, and hang out with his folks. He is just sweet as pie.
Clayton is a pudge bucket who insists on only crawling backwards. He is SOOOO close to moving forward though.
Morgan consistently cracks me up whenever I talk with her. We are looking forward to spending holidays of various kinds with her and her parents.
Frank and Bones are have been particularly snuggly lately which is good considering the weather is bbrrrrr!
Snow of varying depths have fallen in our area, and the tile floor is a killer every damn morning.
More has happened I'm sure, but it is not necessary to write about it.
So...tonight I will: do dishes, eat flan Jer made last night (mmm...with bananas and coconut,) enjoy the latest issue of National Geographic, read more of Uncle Alan's book, keep my toes warm, pray I don't get sick, and fall blissfully asleep thinking of how fortunate we really are.

...bad wife...

To my husband Jeremy...Happy Birthday!...a day late...though I did celebrate with you in person!

I love you so much sweet potato!

Thursday, November 3

Well, October has come and gone.
The birthday was a success. Twenty-seven started off with a nice party thanks to Piper and Nick.
Next came a baby shower (my first experience of throwing one) for our good friend Christine. The best part was that I got to do all the fun stuff (invitations, decorations, food) but didn't have to host it at my house, so therefore did not have to clean! Some of Christine's close relatives have severe cat allergies. They would not have done well at our place, so Christine's mom offered to host it at her house. It was really fun, and I got to make food I had been wanting to for awhile: stuffed mushrooms, roasted carrot spread with cumin, olive tapenade, hazelnut chocolate-chip cookies, Swedish pecans....yum.
Then came a Halloween party where I got to live out being a garden gnome. It's hard being a tall gnome. My hat kept getting knocked off.
Halloween itself involved a visit from Clayton dressed as a shark with Piper and Nick as dismembered beach goers. Then Jer left for work, and I handed out candy to very polite children.
Now we have begun Jer's birthday month, and I am still struggling with what I should find for him. I have a few ideas, but nothing has really screamed out as perfect yet. Blast.

Otherwise...I have been seeing a lot of shooting stars lately, "A Perfect Circle's" cover of Joni Mitchell's Fiddle and Drum is constantly in my mind...it is sung a capella(like her version,)except in three-part harmony and much more hauntingly done...beautiful!, I am currently reading "1491" and just recently finished "Wind-Up Bird Chronicles" both of which I recommend, and...blah! I don't know.

...fun...

Jeremy finally broke down and told me what he got me for my birthday! He figured since it was my birthday week, that I could find out, which rules 'cause I love surprises, but I love finding them out even more.

I get a...tree!
We had a tree cut down this summer in our front yard, so our paper bark maple has been all by itself. Jer was not looking specifically for another of those, but he found one. He thought it would be neat to have a pair of them, and I do too! The best part is I don't have to do any of the installation. Jeremy and our friend Matt are going to take care of it Thursday, Friday, or Saturday!
Maybe it will grow to the famed proportions our other one has. (We have the largest paper bark maple in Kansas City - if not the whole area...it's on the books!)

Otherwise, I'm pretty excited that it has been a great October. The weather has been beautiful, and I have been trying to catch up with outdoors stuff I want done before the colder weather really sets in. I can envision that a good portion of it is going to get put off until spring, but that's okay. As long as we get garlic going, everything else can wait.

...Falling in Love...

Last night I washed and put out the flannel sheets and the thick blanket with animals on it. Fall has struck. Knowing this area, there may still be one or two hold-out days of high heat, but the majority of the days will start to require shoes with socks and longer sleeves. The house is in that in-between stage - too cool to need air-conditioning, not cool enough to need heat. But, my feet are crying out for shelter from the chilly floor, and it is much harder to make that first step out of bed into the crisp air each morning. Now is the start of the season where I really need at least an hour each morning to dedicate to hot, strong coffee and a stimulating book so my day can begin correctly.

I am vowing to be more motivated this fall than last. I WILL put in more garden beds and prepare better now for the spring planting. I WILL go to an orchard and get plenty of apples for pies, crisps, and raw crunching, as well as a belly full of hot cider and donuts. I WILL winterize the house so we don't spend another winter letting precious warmth escape to the outside. I WILL get rooms cleaned out so we have space to fulfill our plans.

So, I'm really looking forward to this Saturday. I have the day off of work, and I get to spend it: going to the farmer's market, working outside (provided the weather is not wet,)decorating the house for Halloween (I believe in decorations for all of October, as it is my favorite month!,)and then going to a party at our friends Scot and Marla's house! I'm sure there will be other activities in the day, but those are all the major ones I can think of!

...The 'couv...

We returned Sunday from our six-day adventure to Vancouver! It was great!!! The city itself is really interesting and nice, plus our traveling companions (Piper, Nick, and Clayton) were loads of fun too. Yesterday was my first day in a week without seeing little Clayton Blue. It was hard, as he is such a sweat pea. Clay was a very well-behaved baby on the flights, and was a mellow traveler. He enjoyed soaking up the city vibe.

As for things we did...went to the aquarium, Stanley park, walked around various parts, ate way too much chocolate, ate lots of other things, babysat, attended the wedding Piper and Nick were going to for about 5 minutes until Clayton had a poop explosion and we had to take him back, indulged in the city's special coffee houses, I got my first pedicure at Piper's urging, hung out with Cynthia and Ross - they live in Seattle and came up for the day Saturday, etc.

I highly recommend visiting Vancouver if you have not. The weather was fantastic (55-65 degrees!) plus they only have black squirrels!

Now it is back to regular life...dishes, laundry, work...yay.

...that girl is poison...

So, a couple of Sundays ago, Jeremy and I had a major yardwork day. I know that I picked some poison ivy to dispose of, but I had never gotten it before (and I know I have been exposed) plus I was wearing gloves. I guess I must have been careless while putting it in the yard-trash bag. Two days later a little patch appeared on my arm. F***! Ah well...I begin using every homemade and over-the-counter remedy known to man. I had a tiny patch appear on my other arm, then a bigger one on my side, and the one on my left arm grew much nastier looking. I fondly referred to it as my mark of the beast. Yesterday, day 11 after exposure, I made my way to Shawnee Mission Urgent Care after work on the advice of many people. The doctor said my side patch and right arm stuff looked fine, but it looked like I had a bacterial infection on the left! Yowzer. So I became the recipient of a steroid shot, antibiotic shot, and tetanus shot. I also get to take oral antibiotics for 10 days...whoo! Sure am glad we have health insurance now.

Tuesday, August 16

Life has just been happening too much for me to keep up in writing. Lots of things have taken priority. But...I woke up this morning, I don't have to go to work, it is chilly and grey outdoors, so I thought, "Ah, a perfect morning to sit down and type a bit!"

I think my favorite things so far this summer have been having Josh, Julie, and Morgan around, and having that little pickle bucket of a nephew Clayton. I love my family. I am really enjoying having a niece who I can talk with, who wants me to do things, as well as having a nephew that I can enjoy his being a baby. He has really chunked out and is just too much!

The garden was great for producing peas and carrots. It also produced tons of tomatoes, but we only got to enjoy one! F-ing squirrels! Next year I am constructing a cage of netting to protect my tasty Cherokee Purples. The herbs have provided many ingredients for salad dressing, mojitos, pesto, and future teas among other things.

There have been lots of friends buying houses, getting married, and in various stages of having babies. It's really fun to watch, and to enjoy all the happiness.

Work has been blissfully mellow, as it usually is, for the summer. The last few weeks though, our weekly trucks have been bulging and we have been stowing backstock everywhere. I've seen one or two earlybirds with their supply lists in hand. I will be enjoying my days off this week, as next starts the mad rush for inexpensive art supplies. I also told my boss, "Work me!" 'cause towards the end of that back-to-school bonanza she is letting me fly away to Vancouver with Jeremy, Piper, Nick, and Clayton! The Couv! Whee.

I hosted a fairly successful art sale in our yard a couple of weeks ago. There were four artists represented with three of us present. We all sold work, and those of us there traded work with each other. I will definitely be doing it again next year, but hopefully with more artists and better advertising.

I love summer food. The farmers market is always such a pleasure to look at. Lately there have been piles of tomatoes and potatoes of every kind you could ever dream. We've certainly been putting away our share of the goods. There has been much cooking at home and with friends this season (as usual I suppose.) Also, we recently tried out a new bistro (Grace, a Bistro on the Edge) that is two blocks away from us. Drool. The prices are low for the kind of food they are serving, but I'm not complaining. We had a mussel appetizer that was...so.damn.good. It had white wine, cream, and tons of garlic. Thankfully it was served with bread so we could sop up all of the sauce. Jer got scallops that had nice pieces of pork folded into them, served on a bed of raw green apple chunks and with really tasty green beans on the side. I got simple, yet divine, fettucinne alfredo. We managed to save room for dessert which was layers of a wafer-like material with thin smears of chocolate mousse and a smidge of apricot, then totally dunked in chocolate. In addition to serving up great food, they are super nice! Plus, they serve breakfast. Dangerous!

The weather turned from the usual August baking into a flood of water and cool-greyness a few days ago, and it hasn't changed back. I've been enjoying the rumbles of thunder while I've been writing. It is teasing me with the possibility of more rain. All I know about this change in weather is that the cicadas don't sound nearly as harsh, and dusty in their calls, and it is baby cricket fest 2005 in our basement.

Alright...I'm off like a prom dress. I have a cat that is anxious for petting and a stomach that needs a bagel with salmon and coffee.

...warp speed...

I feel like I have been running around non-stop, but it has been good! Last week's excitement included: Josh, Julie, and Morgan arriving in town, my manager returning from corporate meetings with high praise for our store and for some of the work I had been doing, more watching Mr. Clayton grow up so quickly (he is over 10lbs. now!), finding out - sadly - that Frank has some sort of liver problem, and trying to figure out what it is, seeing the garden burst with growth, driving to Orrick (about an hour away) to visit my cousin, and slowly getting the house back in order.

This week should be a little more calm. I don't have as many hours at work, and some of my pressing projects such as cleaning the gutters have been accomplished. I hope the streak of sunshine continues...my arms are beginning to nicely brown. I think later on in the week, I am going to be taking Morgan to see the Herbie movie. It has been so great having that family around, and it has only been a few days!

I definitely need to start getting into high gear for the art sale I am hosting in August, especially since I am taking a few days in mid-July to head to NYC.
Alright...I'll stop thinking through my weeks ahead. Right now I need a refill on my coffee, to make my lunch, and to water the garden before I head off to ye 'ol Utrecht.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RICK!!!
I'm sorry it is a day late...time has been slipping right past me.
I hope it was a good one. Love you!

...need a boat...

I'm sitting at our computer, enjoying my morning cup of coffee. It is just a bit past 9:00am, yet the lighting outside makes everything feel like 5-6:00am. The sky is a flat grey/green. A tease of rain was coming down while I was showering, and then preparing my bagel and coffee. After being on the computer for a bit, the rains came down in a BIG hurry amid lots of clapping thunder and flashes of lightning. It seems to be letting up now into just a regular heavy rain.
Man...I have to go out in it soon, and I will be parking and walking a bit of a distance. No umbrella. Damn.

Tuesday, May 24

...energizer bunny...

So, the last few days have been a bit overwhelming for many reasons.

Thursday we jumped in the car and made our way up to Mukwonago to spend a night with the very hospitable Josh, Julie, and Morgan. It was wonderfully misty for the last hour of our drive. Neither of us had been to Wisconsin before, so it was fun taking it all in. We arrived on their doorstep, and were greeted not only by hugs and smiles, but by the tasty scent of chicken jambalaya and a apple/blueberry/cranberry crisp. Drool. We visited a short bit, and then it was dinner time. Yummy. Julie's cooking lived up to the hype.
After dinner, her folks came over to meet Jer and I. I didn't expect to have my picture taken, but it was! Ah well. It was nice to meet them. It was during that time that we learned Rick was in the hospital. We couldn't reach him, but we kept him in our thoughts.
We had a really great evening of talking, drinking, eating, etc.
The next morning we got up relatively early to say goodbye to Morgan before she left for school. She somehow conned me into playing the My Little Pony game that she has (it's not very hard to get me to play board games.) We lolled about, tried calling Rick (they said he was discharged-we couldn't reach him at home-we found out once we were back in KC that he had not been discharged! We are happy you are alright Rick!), then Josh mentioned that there was a Greek diner in town. Jeremy's ears perked up, and he was dressed in a flash. Julie stayed home to work, but the rest of us headed for the diner. Good good. We came back and got to hang out with Julie and Josh until we had to leave for Madison. Thank you Julie, Josh, and Morgan for a fun visit. We will see you in a few weeks!!!

We headed on to Madison. I'm not very in to the driving style that I mainly observed in Wisconsin...driving instead of passing in the left lane, switching between going really fast, or real slow. Whatever. We made it to the hotel in kind of one piece. Madison was hard for me to drive in. There was a lot of construction, bike lanes in the middle, but bikers riding everywhere, and twisty streets. But, it is a really nice town.
We hung out in the room, and freshened up, then made our way to the botanical garden for Emily and Greg's wedding. It was a very nice ceremony. Towards the end Jasper (their son) wiggle out of his Grandparent's arms, and walked over to his Mom and Dad. Very cute. I was the only high school friend who made it to the wedding, so I was a little nervous about if anyone would talk with us at the reception.
Ah, the reception...they rented out a fantastic local restaurant. We got a couple glasses of wine in us, then headed to the seats that we would not leave for the next couple of hours. Check out this menu:
*ancho chile and sweet onion focaccia with a chimi-churri dipping sauce
*celery root and potato soup with walnut-apple puree
*mesclun greens topped with a salad of Incan quinoa, jicama, raisins, carrots, onions, peppers, and tropical fruit, dressed with citrus vinaigrette

I had for my entree: mexican beet gnocchi and creamy sunchoke puree with sauteed bartlett pears, roasted pecans, oyster mushrooms and zucchini.

Jer had: seared sea scallops with a spicy peanut sauce and a crab-mango-haricot vert salad wrapped in rice paper.

There were other choices, but I will not go into them.
For dessert there was:
"A Florida lime custard dome on a sweet-spiced crumb crust, with a cajeta cream and coconut rum sauce."
or
"Gianduja chocolate mousse layered between Brazilnut torte, with passion fruit and Kahlua-chocolate sauces."

Ahhh!!! So good. In between all of the food was drinks, merry-making, talking, laughing, etc. By the time the dancing came around, I could hardly move. We had to waddle back to the room, where I straight passed out.

Saturday was just a car day.

Now we are just back to work, seeing friends, getting ready to re-arrange our house with the furniture we are getting from Daddad's, gardening, watching all the baby bunnies and birds, and getting geared up for more parties, weddings, movings, and more!

Sunday, May 8

...blue crush...

I didn't get to actually see Clayton until yesterday morning due to the fact that he was in the NICU up until that. Nothing serious...he was born with the cord around his neck, so they were extra cautious with him, but all is fine.
He is just divine!
Today, after work, Jeremy, Mom, and I drove up to Piper and Nick's for Mother's Day and to help welcome Clayton to his first evening home. I finally got to see his pretty little eyes open, and he looked right at me! I held him a bunch, and just watched him. I got tears just because. Sigh. It is so nice having him here.

Thursday, May 5

...new baby!...

Piper and Nick had their baby this morning at 11:16 a.m.!
His name is Clayton Blue. Jer and I are going to visit this afternoon to see that sweet baby-face for the first time. Yay!!!

Friday, April 22

...serene siren...

Last night we had our first tornado sirens of the season! I was at work, which is basically a glass box except the bathroom, when they started screaming. Nothing usually hits inside the city, but I was a little concerned that they were actually going off. Outside things were tinted green, a bit on the still side, and the clouds did not look right. We went into the bathroom for about a minute, and then decided f-it...we can run in if we hear the deafening train-like roar (which is dumb...you usually only have about a minute warning to take cover!) A customer who came in after we left the bathroom made fun of me for being concerned. The sirens went on for ten minutes or so.
When I got home, I found a message on my cell phone from my Mom. It was from the same time the sirens were blaring. Apparently a police officer reported seeing a funnel cloud around 40th and Jefferson. For those who don't know, that is VERY close to where I work! In your face jerky customer. Did you not grow up in Kansas?!
The best was driving around town about sundown. The incoming night made the now long and smooth clouds appear like ocean water right before a storm.

Today is grey and the wind is propelling maple helicopters everywhere.
Soon I will be leaving to participate in the great inventory of '05. I know you must envy my Friday night of compulsory counting and re-counting.

Thursday, April 7

...boppin' along...

Today is...grey, but that is okay. Knowing the wild K.C. weather, it is likely to change to extreme heat and sunshine at any point. I hope it rains more though, because it is good for the plants. The perennial herb garden I put in in the fall is popping up like crazy. We have mint and lemon balm coming out of our ears already! I've been enjoying the endless singing of at least 15 different birds, as well as the scattering of bunnies and squirels every time I step outside.

Jeremy is sick. Sad face. Nothing too serious, but he sleeps more than usual...which is a lot!! I have to be nice and not harass him with song and dance routines like I normally do. I made some tortilla soup the other night though, which should hopefully aid in his recovery. I had never cooked with raw chicken before! It turned out good...I just washed my hands a little compulsively.

I am procrastinating from cleaning up my studio. I want too, yet I don't want to face it because it is so hopelessly filled with junk!!! Alright...just another cup of coffee and I'll go freak out on that room.

Otherwise...work(s) are going good - busy, busy, we have a date set for the estate sale at my Daddad's which is a motivator for getting stuff done, Piper is like a parade balloon and the time for delivery is creeping closer!, we and the cats are well fed, watered, and happy so there isn't really anything to complain about!
...tattered notebook...

Since everyone else is busting out poetry, I thought I would treat you to some verse from my high school poetry notebooks!

This first ditty is from May 30, 1994:

Denny's
the epitome of all existance
muzak in the background
shmigging and drinking my coffee
the blackness of it enthralls me
steam
beats running through me
da bum bum...da bum bum ching
people crowding my aura
drinking milked up coffee
they're the true wimps
people suck
existence sucks
die preppy scum
yeah.

Here is one from April 1997 entitled New York #1:

rooms of spinning people
trying not to break the seal
broken vortex
mad city pulsing
fearless against the night

confidence with legs
we run through subways
man with directions
has no money
but now owns cigarettes
lighted mechanical dreams
fed an artist tonight

Alright...one last one and then I will quit assaulting your eyes. This next one actually appeared in our high school's literary magazine! A lot of people thought it was sexual (due to the getting off line), but honestly it was not meant to be. October 2, 1994:

Alice has given me her magic mushroom
and the Mad Hatter is molesting me.
The Caterpillar inches towards me
and I fall into a sea of feathers.
Cheshire Cat, your smile hypnotizes me
as you slowly fade away.
I like Wonderland
and shiny magic mirrors.
Vivid images appear and delight me.
Sound becomes another language.
I can see through you
and my mask is taken off.
Catch a quick glimpse
because you'll never see me again.
The earth has stopped and I'm getting off.
Only whispy thoughts of me will fog your memory.
Like a candle,
I have melted into a visionary puddle.

Saturday, March 26

So...in the days before it was officially spring we had great weather. Once that vernal equinox hit...it snowed! Nothing stuck, but still! Now it has just been grey, chilly, and wet since then. Bring back the sun! The flowers were blooming, and now they just seem confused.

I finally got new glasses! Not just one pair, but two. I branched out in my style a little bit...one pair is dark plastic semi cat-eye-y. The other is wire frame like my previous, but shaped slightly different. The world is so clear to me now.

The baby book was finished and presented. That is pretty much all I did in the almost week that Jer was gone. Work...work on book...work...work on book. But it was fun. Piper and Nick really liked it, and I did my first binding that involved bookcloth. On to the next project!

Nothing much else new.

...i haven't lost my marbles...

Wow. The weather has been reaching into the 70s, green has been shooting up everywhere, and birds are singing like crazy. On top of that, I have had a really great weekend. Friday I was able to work on Piper's babybook a lot, which I definitely need to do more of. After that, I headed into work for a short while, then Jer came and met me to go down to gallery openings. There were some good things we saw, but I started to get too freaked out by all the people. I needed to leave, plus we had not had dinner yet, so we were both getting hungry. Jer came up with the idea of eating at Jazz (New Orleans style food.) I had only eaten there once years ago, and it was when I was vegetarian, so there was not much choice as to what I could indulge in. This time we went all out. Margaritas for me, wine for Jer, fried pickle appetizer, oyster po'boy (with coleslaw and hushpuppies) for me, andouille po'boy (with coleslaw and hushpuppies) for Jer, then beneigts and coffee for dessert. Ohhh...so good...so stuffed. We barely rolled home, and the rest of the night is kind of fuzzy.
Saturday I was totally off of work. Mom and I were supposed to be meeting at Daddad's to do more cleaning/going through of stuff. Instead, she, Jer, and I went to the marble fest at the moon marble company. None of us had been there before. It ruled! We got to see glass artists from across the U.S. and the amazing marbles that they create. Plus there were demos on various marble-making techniques. Moon Marble is pretty much a giant, crazy store. They not only have tons of marbles, and marble-related games, but lots of toys, and games in general, but all really great stuff...not mainstream toys so much. Afterwards, Mom and I went back to her house for some going through of stuff there, and Jer headed home. After I came home, I had just enough time to clean a little bit before my pals Joanna and Becky came over. We had a nice evening of gabbing and eating good food.
Today I am off to work soon, and who knows what will come about after that.
Josh, Julie, and Morgan...this weekend all we could think of was you all, what with cajun food, fun toyness, and a nice thank you card from Morgan. We miss you!

Thursday, February 17

...bright...

I've been feeling bright for many reasons lately: the sun that has been shining for days, all the coffee I drink in the morning, a new teaching assistant job in fiber, fun lounging with Jeremy, friends getting engaged, planning and working on the babybook I am making for my nephew...not that I don't normally feel pretty good. Everything just seems new and fresh and light. Even things that maybe I should worry about are just not bothering me. That's always nice.

Otherwise...I don't have much to say! I've just been busy with lots of projects and work.

Sunday, January 30

...sigh...

As I am sitting inside, flannel pj pants on, thin t-shirt, and hood up from my sweatshirt, I am taking frequent peeks at what is going on outdoors. There is a plump, solitary dove perched on an angled wire above our garage. All around her there is gentle snow falling like sifted sugar. The sky is a flat grey, but the nerve-like quality of the tree branches break it up. Now I can hear the dove's coos through the window. Different birds are answering back.

...weekend update...

Jeremy and I have had an abundant social calendar to attend to lately, so I haven't had as much leisure time...well, leisure time by myself! I don't feel super write-y right now, but Rick requested an update!
Yesterday was my day off so how did I spend it? First I met with the historian at Elmwood Cemetery (the oldest cemetery in K.C....very interesting.) Far-back generations of my family are buried there, so I had gathered some info/photos for him to take a look at. He just about fell over with some of the stuff...sweet! After purusing some graves, I headed off to my Mom's house to help go through stuff in my old room and clean it out. We need a spot to move all the family history items from my Daddad's to. Most of the things left in that room were from high school. Last night, after returning home from a show at the info shop, Jer and I shared our deepest poetry that we had written in our younger years. It was pretty funny. I also found lots of old art, casette tapes, books, bizzare items, and one lonely flavored condom from when I used to volunteer at Condom Crusaders. So...here is a funny story that you may or may not know about me.

When I was a senior in high school, I ocassionally volunteered at Condom Crusaders putting together the little sample packs that they gave away when they spoke to groups. It included one lubed condom, one non-lubricated, a little tube of lubricant, and an info packet that contained proper condom usage, safe-sex tips, how to clean needles if you have to share one, etc. ANYWAY...as a volunteer, we could have as many condoms as we wanted. In the offerings were many flavored ones...grape, strawberry, banana, cola, etc. I took some of each flavor. Now, it is none of your business as to whether or not I was using them for their intended purpose, but I did have one totally lame moment with them. It was a Friday or Saturday night, and I happened to not be going out. I was up in my room, listening to music, doing whatever. Suddenly I wondered, "Do those flavored condoms really taste like what they say they will?" I proceeded to unwrap each one and take a couple of licks. After a bit I realized how totally lame I was...alone, licking flavored condoms. Dork.
Water
You are water. You're not really organic; you're
neither acidic nor basic, yet you're an acid
and a base at the same time. You're strong
willed and opinionated, but relaxed and ready
to flow. So while you often seem worthless,
without you, everything would just not work.
People should definitely drink more of you
every day.

...lady luck...

We survived all of the icy-ness with no power outages, or slips on staircases and sidewalks. I was sad to see the world of delicately crunching grass and glass-encased trees melt away. But...what replaced it was fog! Yesterday, as I left for work, I paused for a moment to breathe in the silence and enjoy the view of our street enshrouded in fog. I especially love looking at the neighbors towering evergreens when we are lucky enough to have fog. Today seems to be sunny, yet still cold.

In other luckyness...both of my pieces in the show downtown sold on the last day it was open! Woo-hoo! Plus, yesterday I won a fine lump of cash in a contest to sell easels at work. Maybe I should go to Vegas...uh...probably not.

Otherwise, I have been indulging in a couple of books..."Cosmic Trigger" by Robert Anton Wilson, "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott, and "An Alchemy of Mind:The Marvel and Mystery of the Brain" by Diane Ackerman. Yay!!! Reading rules!

...back in black...

We returned home from our jaunt to Michigan safe and sound on Sunday. We had a very relaxing, fun trip hanging out with Alan, Meade, and Liam (Lucas, unfortunately, had to work the whole time.) There was a lot of hiking, reading, playing of skittle, sleeping, drinking wine, and eating fantastic food - much of which was made by Alan. Our New Year celebration consisted of spending the day hiking with Alan, Meade, and Jer...eating a late lunch, going to see "Ocean's Twelve" with Jer and Liam, then returning from the movie about 11:45pm to find dinner almost ready. At midnight we had a champagne toast, then feasted on lake trout encrusted with a ground nut concoction, steamed asparagus, challah, and fried potatoes. So good...
Jer and I decided that we enjoy the idea of midnight dinner every New Year's Eve!

So...thank you Meade, Alan, and Liam for your generous hospitality. We had a wonderful time as always.

Otherwise...Christmas was good. There was much celebrating and festive activities. I worked a bunch, then we left, now we are back, and it was right back to work! Good friend Mandylan is in town, so I got to hang out with her yesterday. Currently we are right in the grip of an ice storm. Please chant amongst yourselves that no tree brances will crash through our house, onto our cars, or tear down our power lines! Yay! So far, so good...we are warm, and Jeremy is creating dinner as I type. Yum. Hope everyone is happy, healthy, and filled with love for their fellow earth inhabitants.
